The Powerwall 3, Tesla’s latest home battery system and it’s set to transform how we store and use energy in our homes.
Building on the success of its predecessors, the Powerwall 3 offers greater power, enhanced efficiency, and smarter features. This blog explores why the Powerwall 3 is an excellent choice for home energy storage.
What’s new with the Powerwall 3?
The Powerwall 3 isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a complete rethink of home energy storage. Its standout feature is the built-in solar inverter, allowing solar panels to connect directly to the battery for more efficient energy storage. This innovation boosts efficiency to 97.5%, a substantial increase from the 90% seen in the Powerwall 2.
Power output has also seen a significant jump. The Powerwall 3 delivers up to 11.04kW of continuous AC power, more than double the 5kW of its predecessor. This increase means you can run more high-energy devices at once, even during a power cut.
Tesla has introduced an advanced thermal management system to keep the Powerwall 3 running optimally, even in challenging conditions. This feature helps maintain performance and extends the battery’s lifespan, showcasing Tesla’s focus on long-lasting, high-quality products.
Another key improvement is the shift to Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, replacing the Lithium Manganese Cobalt (LNMC) used previously. LFP batteries are more sustainable, lighter, and have a longer lifespan.
While the Powerwall 3 retains the 13.5kWh storage capacity of its predecessor, don’t be fooled into thinking it's just a repeat of the old model. With its increased power output, the Powerwall 3 can support energy-hungry appliances like electric showers or heat pumps more effectively.
On the solar side, the Powerwall 3 can handle up to 20kW of solar input and includes three separate solar inputs. This flexibility allows for more customisation in your solar panel layout.
Tesla has also upgraded the backup capabilities. In the event of a power cut, the Powerwall 3 switches to backup mode almost instantaneously. Thanks to its higher power output, more of your home can continue to run seamlessly during an outage.
One of the most exciting design improvements is its stickability. Soon, you’ll be able to add expansion packs, each providing an additional 13.5kWh, bringing your total storage up to 54kWh. This modular approach allows you to start with the basics and scale up as your energy needs grow.
The Powerwall 3 isn’t just about energy storage—it’s about intelligent energy use. Through the Tesla app, you can monitor and control your energy consumption in real-time. You’ll be able to track how much energy you’re generating, storing, and using at any given moment.
More than just a monitor, the app allows you to optimise energy use based on your preferences. You can prioritise self-consumption of solar energy, or charge from the grid when electricity rates are lower. The Powerwall 3 even learns from your usage patterns and weather forecasts to make smart, automated decisions on when to store or use energy.
Whether you're starting fresh or upgrading an existing system, the Powerwall 3 is highly versatile. For new installations, the DC-coupled version allows direct solar panel connection, while those with existing setups can choose the AC-coupled version.
The Powerwall 3 also integrates smoothly with the grid and is compatible with both single-phase and three-phase power systems. During a power cut, its is landing capabilities ensure your home remains powered independently of the grid.
Tesla has designed the Powerwall 3 to handle a broad range of environmental conditions, operating in temperatures from -20°C to 50°C. Its IP55 rating protects against dust and low-pressure water jets, making it resilient in most climates.
The Powerwall 3 operates quietly, typically below 50 decibels—similar to a quiet conversation—even at full output, noise levels don’t exceed 62 decibels.
Warranty and long-term performance
Tesla offers a ten-year warranty with unlimited cycles for the Powerwall 3, ensuring you can rely on your system no matter how frequently you use it. After ten years, the battery is guaranteed to retain at least 80% of its original capacity.
With the shift to LFP battery chemistry, the Powerwall 3 is expected to offer even greater longevity than previous models, potentially exceeding its warranty period.
Comparison with previous models
The Powerwall 3 marks a significant step forward compared to the Powerwall 2. The integrated inverter, increased power output, and improved efficiency are key upgrades. While you can’t add a Powerwall 3 to an existing Powerwall 2 system, the enhancements may make it worth considering a full upgrade.
Although the initial investment in a Powerwall 3 is substantial, the long-term savings can be considerable. By storing solar energy and using it when electricity from the grid is more expensive, you can significantly cut down on your energy bills. The exact savings depend on your energy usage patterns and electricity prices.
For whole-home backup, the Powerwall 3’s increased power output makes it a viable option for many homes during outages. You can also opt for partial-home backup, prioritising essential circuits to extend backup duration.
The Powerwall 3 integrates effortlessly with time-of-use tariffs, allowing you to charge your battery when electricity is cheap and discharge when it’s expensive. It’s even compatible with intelligent tariffs like Octopus Flux, making energy management even more cost-effective.
